FDE is a Zone 4 & 6 prime under the Seaport-E program

3.6 Software Engineering, Development, Programming and Network Support

FDE Prime Contract: N61339-03-C-0102 (Zone 4). FDE was awarded the contract for Universal Simulation Trainer (UST) Devices 2H148 and 2H148A to replace the Advanced First Term Avionics Maintenance Trainer, Device 11B108 for the AV School, Naval Air Technical Training Center, at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. Device 2H148 consists of a new design and new hardware along with reuse of some components from Device 11B108. The UST is designed to provide AV School students with enhanced, realistic simulated displays of equipment to be tested, four commonly used pieces of fleet test equipment, and on-screen maintenance instruction manuals. Each of the trainers is equipped with 30 individual student stations and an instructor station. FDE was further contracted to design and fabricate a new UST implementation for four 2H148A devices as well, which effort is to be performed coincident with the 2H148 UST trainer implementation. In both trainer types, all test equipment will be simulated on the monitor. The simulated test equipment for the 2H148A includes a multimeter, a differential voltmeter, an oscilloscope, a frequency counter, a signal generator and a time domain reflectometer. As with the 2H148, existing hardware will be replaced with a PC-based system of student stations and an instructor station. Each station is equipped with two monitors, a keyboard and a mouse. Throughout the modification and development of the UST devices, FDE has applied engineering and scientific disciplines to support development of the computer software. To replace existing code, FDE is developing new training software using documented development processes and a variety of development tools, including Visual C++, Multi-Gen Paradigm Creator, Source Safe, Photoshop, and others. All software development has followed Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM) Level 3 procedures. The new training software retains all the necessary existing functionality of the software running on the present Devices. The development stations used by FDE will be delivered for use in further upgrades and modifications to the trainer.

FDE Prime Contract: N61339-02-D-0001 (Zones 4 & 6). Under the No Anti-Submarine Warfare (No ASW) delivery order, FDE completed modifications to remove Anti-Submarine Warfare capabilities from the S-3B trainer platform resulting from realignment of the warfighter’s mission. FDE analyzed new mission requirements, evaluated the aircraft No ASW Engineering Change Proposal (ECP) and translated the information into requirements for modification of the trainer. FDE engineers performed critical analyses of the hardware and software functionality that was targeted for removal to minimize adverse effects on trainer operation. Software changes modified the instructor station displays to disable ASW-related functions. Tactics Alphanumeric Displays (TAD), Tactics Graphics Displays (TGD), and touch panels were updated, as were communication interfaces that depended on ASW-related hardware. Software code was created for modification of all mission scenario files to support the No ASW modification.
